The Peppermint Pig originated in Saratoga Springs, New York, back in the early 1880s. The Victorians believed the pig was a symbol of good health, happiness, and prosperity. Eventually a pig, made from hard peppermint candy, became a tradition for many Victorian families during Christmas and New Year. After a festive holiday supper, the candy pig was broken in a cloth bag and the pieces were shared by all in the hope that everyone shared good fortune, heath and happiness throughout the coming year.
