The lord of Linderhof Castle.
Produced for Old World Christmas by the family workshop of Inge-Glas, now operated by the fifteenth generation of glassblowers, is “King Ludwig”.
“Born in Nymphenburg Castle, Munich, in 1845, Ludwig II was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty, and became king of Bavaria at the age of 18 after growing up in his parent’s castle Hohenschwangau. Disillusioned after a lost war with the Prussians, Ludwig lost all interest in politics and became increasingly eccentric. He loved the theater and music, especially Richard Wagner’s operas. He built three castles-Linderhof, neuschwanstein and Herrenchiemsee-at stupendous expense. Linderhof, the only one completed, was the Kings favorite.
But his extravagance and near or actual insanity worried the Bavarian government. Ludwig was certified insane in his bedroom at Neuschwanstein and, a few days later on June 13, 1886 he and his physician were found drowned in the Lake Starnberg. It has never been ascertained whether this was an accident or an assassination”.
In rich tones of red, purple and green, this ornament was created in an antique mold by skilled artisans and was imported from Germany to the United States by Merck Family’s Old World Christmas. “King Ludwig” is pictured showing each side to illustrate its detail and the fine craftsmanship that went into creating this regal ornament. Long retired, this piece measures 5”, is hand-painted and glittered, with arms and legs made of black chenille. This handsome King is topped with the star cap trademark signifying its authenticity as an heirloom ornament created by Inge-Glas. This ornament is in “new”, mint condition, from store stock.
