The legend of Santa Lucia: “In ancient Rome, a beautiful maiden named Lucia refused to renounce her Christianity, and for this, she was burned at the stake. Because her saint’s day fell on December 13th and this was a time when the northern countries in Europe celebrated their winter solstice, the festivals were combined and became an occasion to light candles. In Swedish homes, this is marked by the arrival of Santa Lucia. The youngest daughter is usually chosen to represent Santa Lucia. Dressed in a white gown and crowned with a green wreath with lighted candles, she brings the traditional breakfast of coffee, breads and fruit to her family while singing Christmas songs”.
